work and joy balance – week 23

the moment has come – it is time to hull out. boats on the hard feel so awkward. so rigid. the smoothness is gone.

we wanted to allow us enough time to work on her before we put her in storage. rather longer than being rushed. knowing the law that tasks on boats always take much longer than one thinks. even if you know that law, it still takes longer. it is mysterious. we gave us 2 weeks to prep her for hibernation. the task list is long, I wont bore you with too many details. but will try to give you a glimps of what is going on here:

did you see the nasty and embarrassing rust stain on the port bow? this is from our camping gas bottles rusting away because they were soaked in salt water during our passages.

  1. we removed the rust stain from the bow.
  2. mo mounted holders for the bottles in the storage box in order for them to be fix in place during future passages rather than presumably flying around and being prone to rusting further.
  3. I sanded the 5 bottles, removed the rust and scarified the surface of the old colour, primer, then paint, put scratch protector back on. great tunes accompanied me with a little dance here and there.

all this just to prevent another rust stain on the bow. ufff. our main issues and tasks are the cleaning of the diesel tank and the motor. for both of them we need pieces from europe. thus, unfortunately, they have to wait to be fixed whenever we get back.

the propeller needed some love too. we had a little reef growing on it. on the shaft you can see the remainder of it. the blades were easy done with the sanding machine. the shaft I had to sand by hand. luckily, I had some great tunes again to sing and dance along with. work is so much more enjoyable with music. small layer of lanolin to finish off the task for protection.

additionally, to many rather easy but cumbersome tasks, mo does all the technical stuff. engine and dinghy motor care, removing of the injector pump, some things with the electricity (not my favourite topic), etc. the list goes on and on and on.

sunday was our day off. we spent it speed-hiking on christoffel berg again. the highway to the north is so pretty and the view from the top as stunning as usual.

after we went to the beach. sadly it is no longer one new beach per day. but at least, whenever we can go to the beach, it is always one we have never been to before. they still take my breath – so gorgeous. I can easily spend 45 minutes in the water having fun without getting bored.

followed by a delicious meal at hofi cas cora. grown in their garden. cut in the morning served for lunch. the taste is far from this planet. made with so much love and creativity. wont be the last time we eat there.

in the afternoon we relaxed in our salon while listening to the audio book “allein zwischen himmel und meer” by boris herrmann about his participation in the vendée globe. the toughest single-handed sailing race in the world. a hell of an adventure, which took him 80 days. in many ways we can relate to what he was experiencing on the water. the ups and downs, the doubts. the euphoria and the frustration. the hope and despair. the joy, bliss and happiness. the awe. of course on a different scale, but still nicely put how sailors feels on the water. we highly recommend the book.

our rest day is over. back to work.
